Pumping at Work Essentials: Tips and Suggestions

For new or expecting parents who are returning to work but wish to continue breastfeeding, the pumping journey can sometimes feel overwhelming. Preparedness is key, ensuring your pumping experience remains consistent and hassle-free. Finding a comfortable and convenient space to pump can be challenging, but with a little planning and the right equipment, it can become a less daunting task.

Preparing to Breastfeed While Working

Pumping at work can be a challenge for working parents, but with the right resources, communication, and a supportive environment, it can be a positive experience. Here we will explore preparing to breastfeed while working and review some essential must-haves for creating a functional and comfortable lactation room, both at home and in an office, ensuring a seamless pumping experience as a working parent.

Quality Breast Pump

Investing in a quality breast pump is the first step towards a successful pumping experience. Depending on your preferences and budget, you can choose between electric or manual pumps. Electric pumps are more efficient and come with adjustable speed and suction settings, while manual pumps are portable and convenient for occasional use (even if you work from home). The good news is that pumps are included under most U.S. health insurance plans. Here’s some information in finding one that’s covered, so you can find the one that best suits your needs to pump at work.

Hands-Free Pumping Bra and Clothing

A hands-free pumping bra is a game-changer for multitasking working parents. These bras securely hold the breast pump in place, allowing you to have your hands free to read, work on a laptop, or take care of other tasks, making the most of your pumping time. This simple accessory and other clothing that make it quick to attach and detach can significantly increase productivity while pumping. Another often overlooked item is to have a replacement shirt in case of leaks or spills.

Efficient Storage Containers

Invest in quality breast milk storage containers. Whether you choose BPA-free and plastic bags or reusable storage bottles, ensure they are compatible with your pump and have a secure seal to prevent any potential leaks. Storing expressed milk properly is vital for its freshness and safety, so having dependable containers is key, especially if you’re freezing them or storing the milk long term. Having a separate insulated cooler to store and transport them back home is also something to consider.

Private and Comfortable Location to Pump at Work (that is not a bathroom!)

Ensuring privacy during pumping sessions is crucial to help you relax and feel more at ease. Privacy curtains or room dividers can be excellent additions to a lactation room. They create a secluded space where you can pump without interruptions or distractions, making the experience more peaceful. Since pumping sessions can take some time, having a comfortable seating arrangement is also vital. Ergonomic chairs or cushions can provide the necessary support to maintain a good posture and minimize back pain or discomfort during pumping. You’ll also want to ensure the door has a lock and is clearly marked.

Your Favorite Relaxing Music

Last but not least, elevate the ambiance of your lactation room with the power of music. Create a playlist of your favorite calming tunes or soothing sounds that help you relax. This may be on a small portable speaker or headphones. Remember, the choice of music is entirely personal. Experiment with different genres or sounds to find what resonates best with you. Utilize this time not just for expressing milk but also for nurturing your mental well-being. Music has the incredible ability to uplift your mood, reduce stress, and create a comforting environment, turning your lactation room into a tranquil retreat during your workday.

Requesting a Lactation Room at Work

Having a space to pump is a requirement for many companies, but that doesn’t mean that new moms don’t need to advocate for their needs – especially if you’re the first one! You always want to assume good intent and lack of knowledge. Luckily, the PUMP Act protects your rights to receive break time to pump and a private place to pump at work. The place cannot be a bathroom and must be shielded from view or intrusion.

Communicating effectively with your manager or HR will help create a supportive environment that accommodates your lactation needs. To help you request an ideal lactation room at work, here are some tips for communicating with managers or HR:

  1. Start Early: Inform your manager or Human Resources (HR) department about your intent to continue breastfeeding and the need for a lactation room as early as possible. Is there already something in place, or do they need to set it up? Mentioning intent before taking leave and again just before returning gives them time to prepare and shows an intent to return to work.
  2. Be Prepared: Familiarize yourself with your company’s policies on breastfeeding and pump breaks. Understand your rights and know the laws that protect your right to pump at work. You may even want to find champions at work, others who have experienced pumping at work who may be able to help.
  3. Location and Time: Clearly communicate your preferences regarding the location and timing of your pump breaks. Suggest a private, comfortable, and clean area where you can pump without interruptions. Discuss potential time slots that work best for you and your work schedule, and add them (discreetly) onto your calendar.
  4. Provide Solution-oriented Ideas: Come prepared with suggestions on how to improve or create a dedicated lactation space if your workplace currently lacks one. This proactive approach shows your commitment and may expedite the setup process.
  5. Ongoing Communication: Maintain an open line of communication with your manager or HR department. Be polite, professional, and firm. Regularly update them on any changes or adjustments you need to ensure a smooth pumping experience.

Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and by taking the necessary steps, you can make pumping at work much more seamless and enjoyable. By investing in essential items such as a quality breast pump, comfortable seating, privacy curtains, a hands-free pumping bra, and efficient storage containers, you can make pumping at work easy.
